This project started life as a bare concrete shell that spanned the length of the top two floors of a hotel.
Sections of concrete slab between the two floors were removed to create generous double volume spaces and allow stair access. Windows running the length of the outer perimeter on three sides of both floors framed spectacular views throughout the penthouse.
With an expansive budget we were afforded the opportunity to use generous amounts of handcrafted materials, from Cape Dutch Klompies, to mortise-and-tenon-jointed solid wood cabinetry, to leather riempies woven into the steel balustrades - all tying the project to its local, Cape context while blending with the French style of the building. I very much enjoyed being involved with the interior design in addition to the architecture.
It was a particularly challenging project to manage logistically as we were required to work during designated hours and could only use lifts for transportation of materials at night so as not to inconvenience hotel guests. The struggle was worth it, however, as the final result is a truly magnificent apartment.
Handcrafted solid timber units with dovetail joints & timber runners share space with an aluminium & glass clad island, blending the kitchen & living space.
Windows running along the side of the apartment provide beautiful views & flood the interior with light.
The study & double volume library make use of crafted box shelving & joinery, with Cape Dutch Klompies & leather riempies as key features in the space. Angle-poised reading lamps combine curiously in the light fitting above.
A gloriously dynamic steel & wood staircase sweeps up from the first to second floor, alongside floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with books.
The Green Room - Forested wall paper, a green colour palette & natural materials take their cue from the view of Green Point Urban Park.
Each room offering a rich palette of textures & considered design elements.
Subtle LED lighting was used throughout the apartment to illuminate the inside of cabinets & closets & bring their interiors to life. The Nautical Room above features an LED “star ceiling”, mimicking the night’s sky when dark.
The large decked terrace, with panoramic city & oceans views, features an Eco-pool for a cooling dip on hot summer days.
